General English Extra is our basic English course which meets the minimum requirement for an F1 visa, including additional conversation classes. The focus is on spoken English for everyday situations, but you will study all the key skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking, and the course includes grammar and vocabulary too. You can join the course every Monday (or the first Monday of the month if you are a beginner).
Standard General English Extra is a group course, with 18 hours per week in classes of up to 12 students. 15 hours a week will be shared with our Standard General English lessons, with a further 3 hours each week in conversation classes.
The course will cover everyday English reading, writing and listening with an emphasis on speaking and practical communication in common situations, such as travelling, shopping, and leisure time. There will be support with grammar and pronunciation, and we will also introduce study skills to help you to become an efficient learner and to keep learning when you are out of the classroom.
The content of the lessons is adapted to your needs and interests. All students have the opportunity to discuss, negotiate and plan the week’s work with their teacher and fellow students. The course will usually follow a course book, but we will also use a wide range of materials, including real-life listening and video examples, authentic texts and on-line resources.
New students can join this course at the start of any week, and we will plan each week’s lessons after a discussion with the whole class to make sure that everyone learns the skills that they need.
We will check your progress throughout your stay: your teacher will let you know how you are doing in class, mark your homework and correct mistakes as well as giving you progress tests. We will adapt the lessons according to the results. At the end of the course you will receive a certificate stating the course you have taken and the level at which you have finished.
